This book is about 3 Baudelaire orphans whose parents died in a fire. A man named Mr Poe takes them to Lousy Lane where they met their new guardian Mr Monty. They were planning to go to Peru when Mr Monty's new assistant Count Olaf comes but pretends to be Stephano. The next morning when they woke up, Stephano was waiting at the door of the children. He had done something bad. They went to look in the reptile room and found Mr Monty with a pale face lying on the ground. Now the Baudelaire children are trying to convince Mr Poe to take them away while Count Olaf haunts them.
